In the last ten minutes I have heard news reports call Andy Murray both ‘the first Brit to win a Grand Slam tournament since 1936’ and ‘the first man to win a Grand Slam tournament since 1936’. Both are incorrect, but I like the second one more because it isn’t based on the premise that women don’t count and because the image of a succession of alien victors and abandoned or stalemated tournaments is an amusing one.
