Idoling: Going To A Vanilla Beans’ Show, Or My First J-Pop Idol Concert
What jumped out to me was how fractured…albeit still surprisingly entertaining…the show was. Extravagant pop shows by Katy Perry and Lady Gaga might be loaded with spectacle, but those shows are still structured around the songs, everything coming back to the music. With Vanilla Beans, the songs existed in one universe while the assorted side shows just appeared at various instances, killing whatever flow the duo had going for them but helping to define the group further (primarily, as a chance to talk with the audience, tell jokes and try to make money).
This sounds a lot like an Amanda Palmer show.
