Owen Pallett
“Odessa”
Live in Paris, 2011
Pallett’s arrangement for this Caribou song sacrifices some of the deep bass feeling from the original recording, but is far more exciting and evocative in its discordant string parts and general atmosphere. Also, this is a great showcase for Pallett’s voice, which is a remarkable and underrated aspect of his music.Wow.
This is all true, but if we’re picking his live covers/string arrangements, I’d still probably rate ‘Fantasy’ and ‘This Modern Love’ above this slightly.
Matt’s absolutely right about how underrated/ignored Owen’s (well-supported and really quite pretty) vocals are.
I don’t even love the original song that much but this is amazing! Thanks for posting it as I’d missed it (I’ve heard both of the other two mentioned live).
Also agreed on his voice. I went to a Nico Muhly thing earlier this year with Sam Amidon, Doveman and Owen and nothing against the other two but it was really disappointing that Owen only sung a small part of one song because that was the best bit by a long way.
