maura: Also it made me think of my essay on readers serving as assignment editors from last year.  This article on how “Set Fire to the Rain” ended up at #1 in the US despite not originally being picked as the single is really interesting. I don’t really have an issue with anything in it but I do think that as well as increased people power there is an additional point to be...

Wondering "are we gonna laugh at loving this album...
imathers: Preach preach preach. I’d also say that if you love all of the same stuff ten years from now (or maybe it’d be better to say, if all the same stuff occupies the same place in your heart/mind/life ten years from now), you may want to think about whether that’s healthy. I listened to JJ72’s first album yesterday and really enjoyed it.

Video Games
No, not that (I’ve seen worse, although I suppose that was a perfect representation of persona), but I’ve just done my ballot for my favourite games of 2011 for ilx’s annual Coint and Plick poll and thought I would share. 1. Portal 2 (XBox 360) Portal is a puzzle game with semi-defined solutions where making leaps of logic to work out your plan, and actually carrying out that...

new 2011 albums
I really like what Katherine said in her 2012 resolutions about looking for music outside of the normal review/blog sources. With no 2012 albums to listen to as of yet I’ve been looking for 2011 stuff that I hadn’t heard, and came up with one good way of doing so. I asked all of my Facebook friends for their favourite albums of the year with a promise that I would listen to them (so...

Freaky Trigger Readers' poll →
Yay! Only the also-rans and #50-#41 so far, but it’s already great for the proven equality of Nero singles and the inclusion of PONPONPON. One place below “Price Tag”, but we can’t have everything I guess.

QUIZ: Lana Del Rey's "National Anthem" Or Lady... →
katherinestasaph: This is the most important thing I have ever written. This is great, and makes me wonder what would have happened if Lady Gaga had put out “Paparazzi” (or maybe even “Poker Face”) first before “Just Dance” rather than doing it the other way round - would she have been seen as one great song and then diminishing shtick from there on?

Sound of 2012 →
It’s the start of the year, so it’s time for the BBC-organised poll of music industry tips for success for the year, the Sound of 2012. We’re covering the list over on The Singles Jukebox this week, or at least those on it with current singles. Acts are ruled out if they’ve already been in the charts, hence no Lana Del Rey or Emeli Sandé. Supposedly the panel are asked to...
